Basillica of St. Stephen

Basillica of St. Stephen, Budapest, the largest church of Budapest, is one of the major Tourist Attractions in Budapest. It is situated on the square of the same name. Basillica of St. Stephen, Budapest was designed by Jozsef Hild in 1845 and it can hold more than 8000 worshippers at one time. Before the completion of the project, Hild died and the responsibility was on the architect Miklós Ybl to oversee the construction work. Examination of the structure surprised Ybl as he found huge cracks on many of the building's outer walls. The site was cordoned off and within less tan a week, the vast dome of the church tilted and collapsed and it was thought that the remaining portion was structurally unsound. It was demolished. Miklós Ybl designed the new building in neo-Renaissance style and finally, the building was opened by Emperor Francis Joseph in 1906.

The Basillica of St. Stephen in Budapest is a famous ecclesiastic basilica. It is named in honor of Stephen, the first King of Hungary (c. 975–1038). The Szent jobb kápolna or the chapel of the Sacred Right holds the most revered relic of Catholic Hungary. It is the mummified right hand of St. Stephen. A small glass case contains the hand which you can see as one of the resident attendants will switch on the light.

The interior decoration of the Basillica of St. Stephen, Budapest includes Gyula Benczúr's depiction of St. Stephen offering the Hungarian crown to the Virgin Mary. The interior is laid out in a Greek cross. The facade is grounded by two large bell towers. You can access the dome by elevators or 364 stairs for a spectacular aerial view of Budapest. A protracted restoration program has brought recent renovations which include additional lighting in the nave and the periodic maintenance of the organ of the cathedral. It took more than twenty years to complete the exterior of the cathedral. An impressive piazza area has been added to the Basilica. Along with the Hungarian Parliament Building, Basillica of St. Stephen, Budapest is the tallest building of Budapest at 96 meters.
