How the Gellert Hill Looks

One side of the Gellert Hill drops sharply and headlong into the River Danube whilst the other side bears a staggered appearance like the rows of a tea garden on hilly slopes. The Gellert Hill is cut by several natural fissures that are renowned for housing bubbling streams and springs. The name Gellert of the Hill is an eponym that has been derived from the name of a priest who was called Gellert.

The Mystery behind the Gellert Hill and Gellert Statue, Budapest

According to a saga and some bona fide facts, Gellert was called by the monarch Stephen the First to reform the folks of Magyar. The inhabitants of the then Hungary were referred to as the Magyars. These people were apparently involved in cult worship and did not believe in Christianity. It was the aim of Stephen the First to spread Christian doctrines and philosophies among these people so that they became more cultured and civilized. This was the reason why Stephen called Gellert to his kingdom.

However, when Stephen the First breathed his last on Earth, the Magyars slew the pious Gellert and jettisoned the saintly being from the top of the Hill. This barbaric and horrific incident took place in the year 1046 AD. The Hill, therefore, was named after the holy Gellert. A sculpture of bronze was erected at the spot from where the saint was pushed down. The Gellert Statue embodies the goodness of the savant who tried his hardest to spread devout thoughts among people who possessed primitive natures and warped ideas.

The Gellert Hill and Gellert Statue, Budapest is hailed as one of the chief tourist attractions in Budapest.
