Royal Palace, Budapest

The construction of the Royal Palace, Budapest is one of the most well known and most frequently visited Tourist Attractions in Budapest. History has it that the construction of the palace begun in the middle of the thirteenth century and was continued in the fourteenth century by King Louis the Great. Construction of the outer walls and western fortifications was not finished until the end of the century. A chapel and a palace were added in the fifteenth century by the Sigismund of Luxembourg. King Matthias had the southeastern fortifications and a Renaissance royal palace built and by the late fifteenth century, the Royal Palace, Budapest was one of the most magnificent royal seats in Europe. The famous library of the King of Hungary equaled the Medici Library in Florence.

The main façade of the palace overlooking the Danube is 304 meters long with symmetrically arranged columns in Baroque style on both sides of the dome. There is a statue of Prince Eugene of Savoy in front of the central part of the building. The statue at the gate of the palace garden represents the Turul, the mythical bird of the ancient Magyars. The fortifications of the palace date back to the Middle Ages. The large Round Bastion, 40 meters in diameter and the Gate Tower with its tent roof are there to the south facing the Gellért Hill.

A group of excavated Turkish tombstones lie in front of the Round Bastion on the slope of the hill. Royal Palace, Budapest has two inner courts -- an open one and a closed one. There is a fountain with a group of statues in the open court and the most interesting one among them is that of King Matthias in the hunting gear of the age. The entrances to two museums are in this court. One leads to the Hungarian National Gallery in the centre of the complex while the wing to the north house the Museum of the Hungarian Working-Class Movement. The southern wing features the Palace Museum with the Gothic halls and the recently excavated Gothic sculptures. It displays the history of the Palace and the city.
