Soviet War Memorial, Budapest

Soviet War Memorial, Budapest is one of the most well known tourist attractions in Budapest. The Soviet War Memorial, Budapest was built as a reminder of the sacrifices made by the Red army troops. The troops left the mortal world while liberating Budapest in 1944/45. Though the other Soviet statues and memorials have been removed to the Statue Park in Budapest, the Soviet War Memorial in Budapest remains where it was.

The Soviet War Memorial is situated close to the Parliament, Imre Nagy's memorial statue and the Danube Embankment. It was set up a few months after the Berlin capture in the year 1945. Soviet War Memorial, Budapest is exactly on the Tiergarten that is a large public park situated to the west of the city. This is on June 17 Street near the Brandenburg Gate.

When the Soviet War Memorial, Budapest was first erected, it lay amidst the ruins of the park, Tiergarten. At that time, this park was destroyed by bombs and had a dearth of firewood as the Berliners stole them to use as their home fuel. Till the end of the Cold War, the Soviet War Memorial, Budapest was guarded by several Soviet soldiers who were present in the Soviet sector of Berlin at that time.

The Soviet War Memorial, Budapest is a unique structure. It is a curved and columned portico with one central column on the top of which sits a bronze statue of a Soviet soldier. The gardens around the memorial are beautifully landscaped. On each side of the portico of the Soviet War Memorial, Budapest there lies two T-34 tanks and two Red Army ML-20 152mm gun-howitzer artillery pieces.

If you look underneath the huge bronze soldier statue, you will find a gold crest and a Cyrillic inscription that reads “Eternal glory to the heroes who fell in battle with the German fascist occupiers for the freedom and independence of the Soviet Union.” The soldier’s arm is raised to symbolize the crushing of the German National Socialist party by the Soviet army.

The Soviet War Memorial, Budapest is maintained by the Berlin authorities presently. This memorial is host to several annual commemorative activities including a VE Day celebration in May 8th. It is a popular tourist attraction for tourists especially the Russian visitors to Hungary.
