Protestant Great Church of Debrecen

Protestant Great Church of Debrecen is one of the main attractions in Debrecen. Located in the downtown, it lies in between Kossuth Square and Calvin Square. It is symbolic of the Protestant Church in Hungary and it is after this Church that Debrecen is sometimes called 'the Calvinist Rome'. Protestant Great Church of Debrecen was built in between 1805 and 1824.

Spread over 1500 square kilometer of land, Protestant Great Church of Debrecen is the largest Church in Hungary. It is best known for the bell that is the biggest among all the churches in Hungary. The Protestant Great Church relives the neoclassical architecture and is one of the best tourist attractions in Debrecen.

The whole structure of the church is vast and the central nave of the church is 55 meters long and it almost 15 meters wide. The transept is about 38 meters long and over 14 meters wide. Like all the other Protestant churches, the interiors of the church have been painted white. The inside is about 21 meters high. The church has the capacity to accommodate about 5000 people.

The church also has a historical background as the Revolution in 1848-49, when Louis Kossuth declared the independence of Hungary from the Habsburg Rule; it was from this church that the announcements were made. The armchair in which he used to sit is still kept in this church and is one of the displayed articles in the church.

There are two organs in the church, one in the entrance and the southern part of the church. The newer organ is electronic equipment that is a resonance pipe, 52 registers and 3 manuals. The older one is a Classical organ that is posited behind the pulpit. It was built by Jacob Deutschmann in 1838.
