Classified as one of the most important tourist attractions in Debrecen, the Reformed College is a must-see for all. The Reformed College is known as an important intellectual hub of Hungary which has seen the first seeds of Reformation in Hungary. The Reformed College in Debrecen is a fine specimen of Classical architecture and is a treat for the art lovers. The Reformed College, Debrecen comprises a huge library. You will find a number of books in the library of the Reformed College. It is not only the huge collection but the grandeur of architecture which will amaze the visitors. You will be lost in a totally different world beyond space and time while you leaf through the pages of the books in the shelves. The shelves bear the signs of brilliant craftsmanship. These wooden shelves dates back to thousands of years ago and adds to the charm of the library. Records say that the Reformed College was built in between the years 1804 and 1816.

It was the famous architect Mihaly Pechy who made the whole plan of the Reformed College. However the courtyard wing was designed by a different architect Alajos Vasel and it took almost four years to complete the wing. One of the striking features of the architecture is that you can see large columns which are not only protruding but have a projected tympanum. The walls of the Reformed College is adorned with a number of portraits of famous people especially reformers and people who are an integral part of this famous institution.

A huge fire that broke out in 1802 was responsible for the destruction of the main building of the Reformed College. A new plan was designed by Mihaly Pechy and it got sanctioned and work for the new building started. With the support of the patrons and fundraising groups who worked day and night for raising the money the necessary amount was collected. This institution has made its impact on not only in the educational scenario of the country but has created a domain where the students can come and a platform is created for academic discussions.
