Eger Former Lyceum, Eger stands opposite the Cathedral, on Szabadszág tér. It is now the site for teachers' training college. It is a landmark building in Eger and dominates the square area of the historic city. It is built around a rectangular inner courtyard and the architectural style stands out as a fine example of the architectural brilliance existent in ancient times. The building is a fine example of the plait style present in the 18th century.
Bishop Károly Eszterházy initially intended the building of Eger Former Lyceum to be built as a Catholic university. He initially instructed F.A. Pilgram and J.I. Gerl to make plans to build it as a university. The construction of building was complete in 1765 and Jakob Fellner, the Eszterházys' architect decided it to be designed as an educational university rather than a church university of any kind. So going by the situation at that time, an educational establishment was constructed and it was ranked as a lyceum, or lecture hall.
The entrance area of Eger Former Lyceum is located opposite the Cathedral. On the first floor above the entrance there is a banquet-hall, decorated with frescos by the Baroque artist Franz Sigrist.
