The Bishop's Castle in Gyor surmounts the Káptalan Hill which is to the north of Bécsi kapu tér. The castle was built in the 11th century during King Stephen’s reign. Unfortunately nothing remains of it. In the center of the present Bishop's Castle, Gyor stands the tower which was the residence of Bishop Kálmán in the 14th century. He was the son of King Charles Robert of Anjou. The front of the tower is adorned with the Bishop's coat-of-arms.
This Gyor Attraction also contains a beautiful Gothic chapel which was added in 1481-86. The chapel bears the name of the Gyor Bishop, Orbán Dóczy. Eight large bastions were added on the lines of Renaissance fortresses after 1537. A part of the Bishop's Castle, Gyor was blown up in 1809 by the French. In the 18th and 19th centuries Baroque and Historicist extensions were added to the castle.
The Sforza bastion has the Castle Museum and Lapidarium. You can also see some valuable religious utensils from the 14thto19th century in the Diocesan Museum. The museum of the Bishop's Castle, Gyor is housed in a former seminary dating from 1765. On the walkways below the bastions is an equestrian statue of King Stephen by Ferenc Medgyessy.
