The Cathedral of the Virgin Mary in Gyor is one of the most important historical buildings and is just opposite the Bishop’s Castle. The history of this Gyor Attraction dates back to the 11th century. It was constructed in a triple-aisled Romanesque style. The cathedral was rebuilt after being destroyed by the Mongols. After the Turkish period the interior was added in Early Baroque style.

The interior of the Cathedral of the Virgin Mary, Gyor has barrel vaulting built from 1639to 1645 with engraved coping by the Italian master Giovanni Battista Rava. The west façade and tower dominates the exterior. It was built between 1803and 1823 by Jakob Hendler and features a mixture of 18th century plait style and Classicism. One of the highlights of the Cathedral of the Virgin Mary, Gyor is the ceiling frescos and the main altarpiece (Assumption of the Virgin Mary). These are masterpieces painted between 1772 and 1781 by Franz Anton Maulbertsch.

The central aisle has the depiction of The Ascension, the north aisle has the Transfiguration of Christ, the south aisle has scenes from the life of St Stephen and in the choir are Hungarian saints. Especially significant is the contrast between light and dark in the paintings of the Crucifixion and Christ on the Mount of Olives in the side aisles. On the north side-altar of the Cathedral of the Virgin Mary, Gyor is the revered image of Mary with the Infant Jesus. It was brought here in the 17th century and is Irish in origin.
