Some of the Churches of Gyor
Benedictine Church
Modeled on the church Il Gesu in Rome, the first church of the Jesuits who settled down in the city of Gyor in 1627, was built between 1634 and 1641, according to the plans of Baccio del Bianco. After the closure of the Jesuit Order, the Benedictines became the owners of the building complex in1802. The interior of the church is early baroque. The nave was tastefully decorated in the middle of the 18th Century and the main altar-piece, the ceiling pictures of the sanctuary and the nave were painted by Paul Troger, one of the most famous artists of the Vienna baroque painting.
Carmelite Church
Modeled on the Carmelite Church in Rome, the splendid Baroque edifice of the Karmelita templom (1721-25) is located on the southern edge of Becsi kapu ter. In a chapel-niche to the right of the main doorway can be seen the statue of Virgin Mary, probably the best known Hungarian sculpture by the Venetian sculptor Giovanni Giuliani. There are the pictures of SS Stephen and Emmerich paying homage to the Virgin Mary on the high altar. The sculptures in the church are the work of Franz Richter, also a Carmelite monk.
Greek Catholic Church
The church, built in the Turkish era, was rebuilt in 1727. The iconostas and the internal decoration are from the late baroque-age. They perfectly combine the orthodox way of expression with the characteristics of the contemporary Middle- and Western European style.
Lutheran Church
Characterized by its fine façade, the church was built between 1783 and 1785, in a closed courtyard and without tower. The most remarkable feature of the internal choired, chamber-type church is the late baroque pulpit-altar, along with the painting of Soma Orlai Petrich. Another notable treasure of the church is the baptistery, standing in front of the altar. There is a small group of cast statues showing the baptism of Jesus on its bell-shaped cover.
