Ark of the Covenant Monument

Built in 1731, this 8-meters tall Baroque monument is one of the renowned Tourist Attractions of Gyor. The monument was built by the Viennese court sculptor Antonio Corradini at the request of Emperor Charles III.

Bishop’s Castle

The castle was built in the 11th century during the reign of King Stephen. A part of the buildings was destroyed by the French in 1809.

Cathedral of the Virgin Mary

Dating back to an 11th Century triple-aisled Romanesque building, the cathedral is one of the most important historical buildings of the city. It was reconstructed after having been destroyed by the Mongols.

Chapel of St. Ladislaus

The tourists will see a masterpiece of Gothic art, a reliquary bust of St. Ladislaus, King of Hungary from 1077 to 1095, on the altar of this early 15th century Gothic Chapel. There is a Rococo statue of St Michael (1764) on the south side of the Cathedral.

Hungarian Old People’s Home

Old people still spend their time in this place, where Gyorgy Szechenyi, Bishop of Gyor, had a number of old houses made into a hospice for Hungarian citizens in 1666.

Iron Cockerel

The figure, an iron cockerel on a double cross with a crescent-moon base, standing on the bank of the Mosoni Danube is the symbol of the city.

Kisfaludy Theatre

Located southeast of the Benedictine monastery, stands the modern Kisfaludy Theatre, built in 1978.

Miklos Borsos Exhibition

There is a treasured collection of work by the great modern sculptor Miklos Borsos in the former Bishop’s Palace.

Szechenyi ter

Since Roman times Szechenyi ter has been the center of Gyor, between Gutenberg Square and Szechenyi Square, on Jedik Anyos utca.

Vienna Gate Square

The open area on the Raba, previously known as ‘Republic Square’, is one of the most beautiful Baroque squares in Hungary.
