Short History
The famous building of the city, the Hungarian Ispita is a home to the permanent exhibition arranged for the private collection of Professor Peter Vaczy. The operation of the building which was used as the home of aged and lonely citizens of the city, was supported by the foundation of Bishop Gyorgy Szechenyi. Originally two buildings were joined by an inner courtyard and a link corridor in the beginning of the 18th century. A church was also attached to it. The statues of St. Florian and St. Joseph are seen between the windows of the first floor. The building was rebuilt in the 1960s. The private collection of Peter Vaczy and contemporary fine arts exhibitions have been held in its halls since 1995.
Gyor Municipal Museum was opened to the visitors in the historic building known as the Hungarian Ispita on 11th November 1994. The museum was expanded with a new gallery in 1997.
Collection
Peter Vaczy had started collecting fine and applied art items since the 1930s. His private collection was moved to Gyor in the following way: “I visited historian professor Peter Vaczy two years ago. His great collection of XV-XVIII century furniture, porcelains, glasses, carpets and church relics was famous nation-wide. He would have liked to keep the items together, and it was my pleasure to place this marvelous material in my home town, Gyor” - Erno Kolozsvary.
