One of the most interesting tourist attractions in Pecs is the Tivadar Csontvary Museum. Tivadar Csontvary Museum is dedicated to the memories and works of Tivadar Csontváry Kosztka, who is one of the most celebrated artists of Hungary. The building of Tivadar Csontvary Museum in Pecs resembles the neo-Renaissance pattern. The exhibition of the Tivadar Csontvary Museum was opened in the year 1973. The museum boasts of more than 100 artworks that sum up the works accumulated over a period of almost 15 years. If you proceed from the museum across the street, you will reach the park below Pécs Cathedral. There is a statue of Csontváry in the park.

Though he got little recognition during his lifetime, and was looked down on by the contemporary art establishment. Tivadar Csontváry Kosztka has presented a distinctive vision of the world by the wonderful post-Impressionistic works. It is said that the creations of Tivadar Csontváry Kosztka impressed Picasso so much that he went to the extent of referring him as the ‘other’ artistic genius belonging to the 20th century.

Tivadar Csontváry Kosztka was a pharmacist by profession. Despite that, he went on to become one of the most talked about painters of modern art. Visitors can enjoy the wide ranging collection of the artists’ works. This includes early study drawings, Bible-related paintings, portraits of Maroccan teacher, historical pieces and landscapes, such as the ‘Storm on the Great Hortobágy’ and the ‘View of Selmecbánya’.

Tivadar Csontvary Museum in Pecs is open from Tuesday to Friday from 10 o’ clock in the morning to 6 in the evening.
