Szeged Castle, Szeged



The Szeged Castle, Szeged was constructed parallel to the Tisza River. This castle has got an irregular layout though it has got roughly a rectangular structure. This is one of the popular tourist attractions in Szeged and the location of the castle can be reached comfortably from any part of the city. There is a circular tower, which one can find in every corner of the castle. These towers were built for defensive purposes. The walls on each and every side were fitted with towers that were rectangular in shape. The palace of the castle was turned into an artillery storage space during the 18th century. The visit to the Szeged Castle, Szeged is must for all the tourists coming here.

During the 18th century this castle was surrounded by a ditch that was filled with water. The ditch was 3-3.5 meters deep and 18-19 meters wide. The ditch received its water from the Tisza River. The construction of the Szeged Castle in Szeged started in the year 1247. The castle was constructed by replacing the already existing wooden castle walls, whose towers were made out of stone. After the Turkish attack the castle was again reconstructed in the year 1528 by the order of King Janos. After 14 years the city of Szeged was again captured by the Turks and the castle was also siege. The Turks again rebuilt the castle and they made higher walls, deepened the ditch and filled it up with clean water. According to some historical sources the castle had 323 guards in the year 1545. After seven years the place had 348 guards.

The Szeged Castle, Szeged was badly damaged by the Great Flood which took place in the year 1879. The north-eastern and the eastern wall of this castle feel into the river Tisza. The badly ruined castle lost its significance and it was treated as a big obstacle which hampered the rebuilding of the city of Szeged. The people started to demolish the remaining castle walls. At present the water tower and some interior portion of the castle still remains.
