The Pura Besakih is divided into three parts, one painted black for Vishnu, one white for Shiva, and one red for Brahma. Besakih is an active spiritual center, every day many Balinese coming here to get holy water for ceremonies in their home villages.

The Pura Besakih, Bali is also known as Naga Besukian or the residence of dragon god. Pura Besakih earned its fame of being State Temple at the beginning of 11th Century. The superb constructions of lofty shrines are carefully formed according to the rules of Balinese architecture. Quite similar to the shape of a Chinese Pagoda, these tiers are also known as Meru.

At the time of Odalan, every year the Pura Besakih comes alive with lots activities. Thousands of devotees come and pay their tribute to the Mother God on this special occasion. This occasions mark the foundation of Pura Besakih in Bali. Elegantly dressed worshippers carrying offerings throng here. This festive time is perfect to enjoy the charm of this temple at its best.

Some other important and popular temples in the city of Bali are Pura Ulun Danu Batur, the Temple of the Crater Lake, which is dedicated to the Lake Goddess Dewi Danu, and Tirta Empul, where flow the holiest waters of Bali, believed to possess magical curative powers.
