Wildlife in Bali is abundant and diverse. It is particularly found in the marshlands and forests in the west coast of the Island. They can also be found in areas with dense outgrowth of foliage and areas around streams. Wildlife in Bali thrives in the wet land, upland and meadows.
Despite many centuries of intensive agriculture, Bali has a wide variety of plants and grass lands and forests where its wildlife thrives. About 282 bird species have been noted in the island, of which about 150 are relatively common. In one small area of West Bali the best known species of Bali Starling or Rothschild’s Mynah can be found.
In spite of intense and belated, government conservation efforts, Bali’s national bird is facing threats of extinction in the wild. However due to the dedicated and committed effort of Balinese veterinarian a breeding population of the Bali Sterling has been initiated on the small island of Nusa Penida. It is yet to prove successful. Bali’s only endemic mammal, the Bali Tiger, became extinct in the 1930s.
About 14% of Bali concentrated in the west of the island is designated as a National Park. The establishment of the park is to serve as a wildlife refuge and secure animals from human intervention. However few facilities are provided for visitors wishing to enter the West Bali National Park. Over the years the park is coming under increasing threat from developers and from migrant worker camps.
Mammals in the West Bali National Park include muntjak, banteng, chevrotain, pangolin, cuscus, slow Loris, wild pig, and Black Panther, macaque and leaf monkeys. The waters around Menjangan Island and that within the park boundary provide sustenance to five species of marine turtle as well as dolphin and dugong. In the village of Pemuteran on the North-West coast a private program has been launched to save the highly threatened turtle population. This has proved very successful. It has served as a model for other conservation programs elsewhere in Bali.
