Indonesia, the largest archipelago in the world is one of the frequently visited tourist venues. Indonesia shares borders with countries like East Timor, Papua New Guinea, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand as well as Singapore. History of Indonesia is rich which reminds of one of the past glory of Indonesia.

From the fossilized remains of Java man, it is believed that well-known Indonesian archipelago was occupied 2 million to 500,000 years back. The Austronesian people reached Indonesia around the period 2000 BCE from Taiwan. Around the 1st Century CE, Indonesia was mastered the techniques of wet-field for the purpose of rice cultivation. Moreover, as Indonesia was close to the sea so international trade flourished during this period. As for example, trade links with China and India was made during this period.

The nutmeg plant found in the Indonesia's Banda Islands attracted European colonial powers to Indonesia. Srivijaya naval kingdom was established during the 7th Century. The Buddhist Sailendra and Hindu Mataram flourished in Indonesia during 8th Century to 10th centuries CE. In Java the fantastic Hindu Majapahit kingdom was built in the 13th Century.

The Islamic population around 13th Century was seen in northern part of Sumatra. On the 16th Century the Islam became the main religion in the beautiful island of Java as well as Sumatra. In the 1512 the Europeans set their foot in Indonesia. In the year of 1602 the Dutch founded the well-known Dutch East India Company.

The Dutch rule came to an end in Indonesia during the Second World War. In 1945, Sukarno who was nationalist leader of Indonesia announced its independence just 2 days after Japan surrendered. In the year 1949, the Dutch ultimately accepted the independence of Indonesia.

Sukarno who was the founding president of Indonesia followed authoritarianism. In the year of 1965 an attempted coup was made. In the year of 1968 General Suharto was made the honorable president of Indonesia.

In the year of 1997 and 1998, Indonesia faced East Asian Financial Crisis. Due to which General Suharto had to resign on 21 May the year of 1998. In the year 2004, presidential election was held for the first time in Indonesia.
