Positioned about 20 km from Denpasar city, the Pura Tanah Lot, Bali is one of seven sea temples situated along the Balinese coast. It is also one of the most important temples of Bali. It is said that once Nirartha rested and spent the night on the pretty little rock-island of Tanah Lot when he was traveling along the south coast. He felt it to be a holy place ideal for worshipping the Balinese sea gods. He was given gifts by some fishermen. He told the fishermen to erect a shrine on the rock. This led to the construction of the Pura Tanah Lot in Bali. Over the years, this temple has been a significant part of Balinese mythological history.
