Kalimantan: Information
The history of West Kalimantan can be dated back to 17th century. Dayaks were the main residents of the province before 17th century. The Malay traveled to West Kalimantan and built their sultanates. The facts point out hat there are many Chinese people in this area. There used to be a republic built by Chinese miners called Lanfang Republic after defeating the local Malay sultans. The government of Lanfang Republic was ended in West Kalimantan after the Dutch control in 1884. The Japanese captured West Kalimantan from 1942 to 1945 until Indonesia confirmed its Independence.
The borders of West Kalimantan approximately draw the mountain ranges surrounding the watershed of the Kapuas River that drains most of the region. West Kalimantan is subdivided into two urban cities and ten rural regencies. The cities are Pontianak and Singkawang. The regencies are Sambas, Bengkayang, Pontianak, Ketapang, Landak, Sanggau, Sekadau, Sintang, Melawi and Kapuas Hulu. In Kalimantan approximately 29 percent of the population lives in the Pontianak area.
The territory has an area of 146,807 kilometer square with the inhabitants of about 3.74 million people according to the 2000 census. Chief ethnic groups include the Dayak, Malay and Chinese which make up about 90% of the total population. The rest are Javanese, Bugis, Madurese and other diverse cultures.
