It was during the 1960s that the primitive craft of woodcarving in Asmat has become well-known. The United Nations had supported the project. There are several symbols of flying foxes, bones of wild boar and the tails of kangaroos and a lot more. In order to bring the ancestor’s spirit to the war shields a special feast is conducted. The fast is named as Yamas Pokumbu. Asmat drums are yet another important piece of art. The drum is made up of single piece of wood. Head hunting symbols are carved at the handle of the drum.
