Facts about Kalimantan are relevant to those people who are traveling to the place not only for the first time but also for the seventh or eighth time. Facts about Kalimantan deal with its ecology, places of visit, topographical and demographical details.

It is regarded as the world's second largest island. The northwest part of the island is located in the east Malaysian state of Serawak and Sabah. The rest of the island is a part of Indonesia being divided into four parts namely: East Kalimantan, west Kalimantan, south Kalimantan and central Kalimantan.

The island has a thick cover of jungles on all sides and it is very rich in natural resources which include timber, gas, oil and coal. The main focal point of this place is the mighty Mahakam River which travels through thousands of kilometers across the rain forests from the centre of the island.

The island is also inhabited by the "Dayak" tribes who have their homes near the river basin. The Mahakam river trip is regarded as one of the most adventurous tours. The river boats are specially designed to give the tourists the maximum benefits in terms of accommodation and refreshment.

The Tanjung Putting reserve which is about 415 hectares covers most of the area of the island. It is located on a wetland and consists of swamps and hardwood rain forests.

East Kalimantan: This part of Kalimantan is often referred to as the "Equatorial pearl' due to its abundant natural wealth. This place is the home of the Dayak tribes. The place is also suitable for river rides and trekking. The exotic flora and fauna of this place make it a hot tourist destination

West Kalimantan: This place has its border with Serawak in the North, on the south by the Java sea and Central Kalimantan ranges, and in the east by the Natuna sea. The place has a high potential in terms of industrial growth.

The place also has a connecting road which connects Malaysia to Indonesia. The road is still in its construction stages and is jointly being built by Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei. The road is known as the "Pan Borneo highway".
