Getting to Kalimantan

Getting to Kalimantan is not very difficult as there are a lot of transport services to reach the place. Getting to Kalimantan involves journeys through boats as well as ships. Java and Sulawesi are the two most connected islands though there are ships from the Ruia Islands too. Among the operators who carry passengers, the Pelni operators are the best ones but now days a lot of other operators have started operating. The passenger can cross the land border between Sarawak and west Kalimantan or take a speed boat from Tawau in Sabah to Tarakan or Nunukan in East. For this, the passenger has to arrange for the visa in advance.

For the rest of the world the only way to reach the place is to reach Jakarta first and then take a direct flight to this place.

For International travelers:

Direct flights can be arranged to and from Balikpapan, which is the main city of the island which connects the place directly to Jakarta and Singapore. Direct international flights are available from Balikpapan and Singapore thrice a week and are operated via the Silk air. The Malaysia airlines operate flights between Malaysia and Balikpapan twice in a week.

For Domestic Flight from other islands of Indonesia

  • Regular flight from Makasar of south Sulawesi
  • Regular flight from Denpasar, Surabaya
  • Flight from Semarang of Central Java
  • Regular flight from Jakarta

For Domestic Flight from other part of Kalimantan/Borneo

  • Flight from Balikpapan to Pangkalanbun
  • From Banjarmasin to Balikpapan
  • Flight Banjarmasin to Pangkalanbun
  • Flight from Banjarmasin to Pontianak

The main modes of transport in Kalimantan are the taxis and buses. Being an island, speed boats and water taxis also play a vital role in transportation. In all the major towns like Balikpapan taxis are the main modes of transport while many places can be traveled by foot. Outside the major towns, the main mode of transport are the planes (domestic), buses and cars.
