Transportation in Kalimantan

Transportation in Kalimantan is a major issue of this place as this place mainly consists of forests and rivers. Transportation in Kalimantan has been quite uncomfortable to the travelers visiting it for the first time.

The main mode of transport means are the small boats and water taxis. On land the main mode of transport is by buses, taxis and cabs. In times of crisis, health ambulances can also be found with all the medical facilities equipped in them. They are usually found in the hinterland of South Kalimantan.

Kalimantan can be approached from different parts of Indonesia both by flights and ships. Among the islands, Java and Sulawesi are the most connected islands. The ships mainly ply from the Ruia Island.

Private cabs and taxis are also available but are very expensive. Both flights and ships are available from different parts of Indonesia to Kalimantan. The tourists can cross the land border between Sarawak and West Kalimantan or take a speed boat to reach the place.

Geographically Kalimantan Island has many wide rivers which play a very important role in the nation's transportation. The demand of coal has increased substantially along the years directly affecting the transportation. The coal resource has reached 31.6% which is quite less than that is expected. The increase in the coal demand has directly affected the river transportation system. However it has been observed that the transportation in rivers have their own problems. Thus improvement of this transportation system is only possible if there is some improvement in the river conditions. A pusher barge system is thus recommended in this aspect to overcome the constraint.
