Aceh, Sumatra was the closest point to the epicenter of the 2004 earthquake. 167,736 Indonesians, most of them from Aceh were killed in the calamity. Those who survived have made a steady recovery. The area of Aceh is a strange concoction of a number of ethnic and language groups. Most of the population belong to Acehnese, while the other impressive groups are Gayo, Alas, Tamiang, Aneuk Jamee, Kluet and Simeulue. A significant part of the population belong to China and are influential in the business and financial matters.
