Atashgah

Atashgah, Isfahan is one of the most well known and most frequently visited sites which large number of tourists visit every year as part of their Isfahan Tours. It is actually an ancient Zoroastrian fire temple. The construction of the Atashgah, Isfahan with Sassanid mud brick settlements dates back to the Sassanid era in the 3rd century and it resembles the style of a tower. It is situated on a mountaintop of the same name. The site is located eight kilometers west of city of Isfahan in Iran. The walls are of baked brick cemented together with a clay-reed mixture.

According to the local legends, the ruins that you see today are to be those of a Zoroastrian fire temple. History has it that before the advent of Islam, the major religion in Iran was Zoroastrianism. It is the first monotheistic religion of the world. There are seven things which the Zoroastrians held sacred and this includes the four elements of which fire was considered to be the most important one. The Atashgah, Isfahan is located on the top of a hill and it is no longer in use. But, there is another opinion that the building at Isfahan was actually a military watch tower with a beacon that could be lit to warn of the approaching enemy.

The walls of Atashgah, Isfahan are made of mud brick with the layers separated by reeds from one another. The entire structure is surmounted by a small circular building. It will take about 15 minutes to climb up the hill and the hill gives a wonderful view of the Zayanderood River and the city of Isfahan. Although, there is no clear path for climbing, but, the experience is worth the effort. There is a footpath below in the plain on the opposite side of the road and it will lead down to several interesting Pigeon Towers. Some of these towers are decorated. This spot is also a popular picnic place and you will find here by the roadside a number of Kebab restaurants.

The visiting hour for the Atashgah, Isfahan is between 8:30 hours and 18:00 hours.
