It is one of the finest examples of the architectural excellence of the great Safavid Iranian architecture. Isfahan is one of the 30 provinces of Iran. It is located in the center of the country. The city of Esfahan, the capital of the province was once one of the largest cities in the world. It flourished like never before during the 16th century under the Safavid dynasty when it became the capital of Persia for the second time in its history.

Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque, Isfahan was built in 1615 by the orders of Shah Abbas I of the Safavid dynasty. The architect or ‘mimar’ of the structure was Muhammad Reza ibn Ustad Hosein Banna Isfahani. The construction work of the mosque was finally over in 1618 after a period of nearly 20 years. It was dedicated to Sheikh Lotfollah, the father-in-law of Shah Abbas and also a holy preacher.

The Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque in Isfahan is decorated with mosaics which are regarded as the best mosaics of 17th century era. The tiles of the dome changes color from cream to pink depending on the lighting. You will see a peacock under the dome when you enter the mosque. During particular times of the day, the sunlight adds more shades and hues to the tail of the peacock. By observing the tail and its colors, you can tell what time of the day it is. When you go to the center of the mosque, you will no longer see the peacock.
