Nader Shah also known as the Napoleon of Iran was a cruel and a ruthless king. His harshness toward his subjects made him a fiend. The longer he was in power the crueler and wicked he became. The extravagant cost of his wars drained the treasury. He lost all popularity when he attempted to turn his subjects from the Shiites to the Sunni form of Islam. He was assassinated in June, 1747.
To commemorate his conquests, there is a Mausoleum in Mashad. The Nader Shah Mausoleum, as it is popularly known as is located in Shohada Street. It is a curious piece of architecture completed in 1959. It consists of a heavy slab of concrete which forms a crypt. It also has a colossal bronze group representing soldiers led to battle by a sort of an equestrian commander on horseback. It is about 5 meters high and weighs 14,000 kilograms. The commander bearing a turban and a large ax resembles Nader Shah.
Designed by the late Iranian sculptor Abolhassan Sadiqi and built in Italy by an Italian sculptor named Bruni, the composition is exquisite and marvellous. The crypt shelters the tomb of Nader Shah, who made Mashad his capital and operational base for his campaign against India.
A small museum and a library have been set up nearby the mausoleum. Souvenirs of Nader Shah mainly 18th and 19th century weapons, helmets and 130 pieces of armor from Afshar period, and prehistoric bronze objects unearthed during excavations in the region are on display. It is open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 2 to 4:30 p.m. It remains close on Fridays.
