The place was the chosen summer capital of Achaemenian’s after Pasargadae. The construction of the imposing palace was started by Darius I who was the successor of Cyrus during 518 BC. The construction was completed by Xerxes I and Artaxerxes I over a long period of 150 years. During 331 BC the palace was burnt down by the occupation of Alexander.

The beauty of the entire structure is accentuated by its placement atop the lofty terrace which is accessed by a double staircase which leads to the monumental gateway of Gate of Xerxes. The usual height of the terrace is around 1,475 ft with a width of 985 ft. the visitors can explore the intricacies of the palace by visiting the vast open space called the huge Apadana or the Audience Hall of Darius. This hall lies in the southern side of the palace. The eastern side boasts of the massive Audience Hall which is the massive Throne Hall. The hall was called as the hall of One Hundred Columns, which was stared by Xerxes and completed by Artaxerxes. The southern part of the building offers the chance to enjoy the sight of many other attractive structures. These attractions include the palace of Darius and Xerxes along with the royal treasury.
