The country became part of Persian Empire till the 7th century.

Iraq was part of the Rashidun Caliphate and the Umayyad Caliphate with the spread of Islam. During the Abbasid Caliphate, the city of Baghdad was founded. In the 13th century the Mongols invaded Iraq. The Ottoman Turks took over Baghdad in 1535 which remained under their rule till World War I. Iraq was given as a mandate by the League of Nations to Great Britain after the war. In 1932 Iraq became independent from Britain and King Ghazi became the King of Iraq. In 1958 the monarchy was overthrown by a coup d'etat of the Iraqi Army. There were a number of coups and in 1968 the country came under the Arab Socialist Baath Party.
