Music of Iraq is the real attraction for the music-lovers. Iraq is recognized mainly for an instrument named the oud and a rebab. The most renowned musicians are Ahmed Mukhtar and the Assyrian Munir Bashir. The most famous radio station was the Voice of Youth, which used to play the popular Music of Iraq to continue the culture of the country.
If you hark back to the past, you can see that many of the prominent musicians of 20th century were Jewish. These musicians featured all the instrumentalists, who came to the famous 1932 Arabic music congress in Cairo. Iraq has also made an Arab pop star Kazem al Saher, whose songs feature "Ladghat E-Hayya" that was mainly banned by Saddam Hussein for its lively lyrical content.
Singers, who used to play the Music of Iraq, were mainly Muslim, Jewish and Christian. The most popular singers during 1930 and 1940s were possibly the Jew Salima Pasha. The admiration and esteem for Pasha were remarkable.
All across the Arab world, maqam mainly passes to exact musical styles. During the performance of maqam, the performer always tries to improvise the music based on rules. There are several diverse maqams, everyone come with a special mood and characteristic. There are total fifty and seventy maqams, some of them also have some sub-styles. It is personally connected to Syrian music. Other characteristics of Music of Iraq feature a slow tempo, metrically free ornamentation or harmonious lines. Some famous instruments for the Music of Iraq feature riqq, santur, qanun, naqqara, ney, darbuka, djose and oud.
Kurdish Music is another form of Music of Iraq. It refers to music executed in Kurdish language. Conventionally, there are three kinds of Kurdish Classical performers such as storytellers, minstrels and bards. Several musical types are established in this genre. Some of the songs are epic in nature like the famous Lawiks, Heyrans and Lawje.
