Transportation in Kilkenny

The infrastructure of transportation in Kilkenny is very well developed. The transportation network in Kilkenny includes both rail and road transportation. For more information on various modes of transportation in Kilkenny, keep reading.

Transportation in Kilkenny by Rail

The Kilkenny railway station started operation on 12 May 1848. The first railways links between Kilkenny and Dublin were laid in the year 1850, which was soon followed with railway links to Waterford in the year 1854, to Portlaoise in the year 1876 and to Castlecomer in the year 1919. In the year 1962, the Castlecomer and Kilkenny Junction lines were closed by Córas Iompair Éireann. In the year 1966, the Kilkenny railway station was renamed McDonagh and ever since then it has remained an important stop on Iarnród Éireann's intercity route between Dublin and Waterford.

One of the major differences between the location of railway stations in Ireland and the location of railway terminals in other countries is the fact that in Ireland the layout of railway links was always dictated by military matters rather than by considerations of trade or public transport. In fact, the positioning of Kilkenny railway station seems to exemplify this peculiarity, as the military barracks are located very close to the railway station.

Road Transportation in Kilkenny

Once in the city of Kilkenny, the best way of getting around is by availing of various modes of road transportation. These include both public and private buses and metered taxis. However, traffic is pretty slow moving in Kilkenny as the city streets are very narrow and a lot of pedestrians walk on the streets itself.

Bus Eireann is the most popular bus and coach service provider in the city and apart from providing intra-city commutation it also provides long-distance service. A number of Bus Eireann buses operate in and around the city of Kilkenny, linking it to some nearby towns and cities as well. However, if you wish to go downtown, you will not be able to reach there by a bus.

Some of the major taxi companies that operate in and around the city of Kilkenny are Billy Delaney Cabs, Kilkenny Taxi Service and Nicky Power Taxi. It is advisable that you take a taxi in Kilkenny only if you have to travel long distance or to the downtown area.
