Getting to Letterkenny



Letterkenny is the largest town in Donegal, with a population of about 18,000. It is a fast expanding town, with many housing developments being built. This has spoiled much of the scenic environment near the town. Getting to Letterkenny is easiest to reach by car or by bus only, as the rail link is not so developed. For getting to Letterkenny you can avail of any of the three main roads, leading to Letterkenny.

If you are traveling from Northern Ireland you should take the one from Derry. This is the best route if you are coming from Great Britian by air or sea. The other one is the N13 from Sligo via Bundoran, Ballyshannon and Donegal town, all of which are bypassed. The third route from Dublin is the N2 via Monaghan, Strabane and Lifford. This journey takes about 4 hours.

By Bus

The easiest way for getting to Letterkenny is by availing Bus Éireann, which is the national bus company and runs nine trips per day to and from Dublin to Letterkenny. An adult single fare currently costs €17.50 and a return costs €27.00. Some of these buses also ply via Dublin Airport. The private bus companies, such as McGinley's Buses and Feda O'Donnell's Buses run similar type services. The Bus Eireann time table from Letterkenny has recently been rescheduled and offers services during the night as well as early morning. These buses run via the Airport.

By Air

The tourists can fly to Donegal International Airport or City of Derry Airport for reaching Letterkenny. Aer Árann operates a daily return service from Dublin to Donegal, with services to and from Glasgow. There is a bus service from Donegal International Airport into Letterkenny, which takes you along a very scenic route via Glenveagh National Park.Getting around the city of Letterkenny is also not a major issue as you can avail of the bus service or the taxi or explore the place by foot or by bicycle.

By Taxi

There is a regular taxi service with fares governed by national regulations. The best place to get a taxi is at the Market Square, which is in the town center. There are a number of cab services that can be called and most public phone boxes have numbers displayed.

Letterkenny has a long and wide street and walking is a good option within the town limits, as you can get around most of the places of interest by foot.
