  • Sligo Abbey, Sligo – This is a ruined abbey and is officially known as the Dominican Friary of Sligo. This beautiful abbey was built on the order of Maurice Fitzgerald, the Baron of Offaly in 1253. But it was destroyed by fire in 1414, damaged in 1595 during the Tyrone War and again in 1641 during the Ulster Uprising. Even then the friars lived here till the 18th century. In the mid 19th century part of the ruins were restored by Lord Palmerston. In the early 19th century the abbey was handed over to the government and is now a National Monument. The abbey church has a double aisled nave and transepts. You can see the choir gates which are from the original foundation while the transepts date back to the 16th century. Some of the highlights to be seen are the canopied tomb of Cormack O'Crean. It is located on the northern side of the nave and features a Crucifixion and other figures in low relief. You can also see the O'Conor Sligo monument dating back to 1624 in the south side. The beautiful cloister of the 15th century has survived with only three sides. Other surviving features are the 13th century sacristy and chapter house.
  • Famine Memorial, Sligo – The County has three memorials to the Great Famine when thousand of Irish perished. The memorial is one of the popular places for Sligo Sightseeing. The memorials have been erected by the Sligo Famine Commemoration Committee.
