The Town Clock

The Town Clock, Galway greets all the visitors who come to the town with its imposing figure. It is the highest tower on the Church of St. Nicholas and also the highest structure present in the town. The clock was gifted to the Church by a former Rector, Dr. O’Sullivan before he became a Bishop of Tuam. The huge clock was installed in the tower in the year 1898. The The Town Clock, Galway can be seen by visitors from 3 sides as its dials faces towards south, east and west.

The huge bell of The Town Clock in Galway strikes every hour with its loud and resonant sound. The clock cannot be seen from the north side of the tower because the wall is flat there. In this regard, the legend goes that the church refused to give the Poor Clares’ Convent “the time of day” but the reality is that the mechanism of the clock is such that it can only hold 3 dials.
