Donegal County Museum, Letterkenny, which used to be the house of a Warden of the Letterkenny Workhouse, was built in the 1843. The Donegal County Museum, Letterkenny is located on High Road in the large city of Letterkenny in Ireland. In the former years it served as the workhouse during the time of famine.
History
The building of Donegal County Museum was constructed by Alex Deane of Cork. The building was built in the Neo Tudor style. The stones used for building the house were imported from Lord Abercorn's Quarry. The workhouse doors opened in 1845, at that time 46 famine stricken people were admitted in the workhouse.The museum was opened in the house in 1987. The official opening was done by the President Mary Robinson on June 14 1992. The building went through a series of renovations during 1990 and 1991 and between 1999 and 2000. It is one of the leading tourist attractions in Letterkenny

The main function of the museum was to collect, record, preserve, communicate and display the material proofs related to the history of Donegal. There is a wide range of collections of original artifacts, which give you an idea about the archeology, history, social aspects and folk life of the region. This is done to ensure the establishment if the rich cultural heritage of the country, to enrich the life of the citizens and create a sense of identity of each individual. There are two exhibition galleries, a workshop, storage facilities to preserve the artifacts and numerous offices within the building.
On the first floor of the Donegal County Museum, Letterkenny, there are exhibits ranging from the pre-historic stone age period connected to the history of Donegal till the 20th century and the present days. Each year an exhibition takes place on the ground floor with selected variety of exhibits.
A prior booking is needed for visiting the museum. The museum remains open through Monday till Friday from 10:00 AM- 4:30 PM and on Saturday from 1:00 PM- 4:30PM. It remains closed for lunch from 12.30PM-1.00PM. The entry is free. The time limit for the tour is 40 minutes. There are car parking facilities in the museum. The disabled individuals have access to the museum and the toilets.
