Glenveagh National Park, Letterkenny is located along the Derryveagh mountain to the northwest of Donegeal and is 25 kilometers north west of Letterkenny.. It is one of the popular tourist attractions in Letterkenny decked with various options like hiking, exploration of castles, forests or spectacular gardens or mere sightseeing in Letterkenny. Glenveagh National Park, Letterkenny has everything to offer. It will cover an integral part in the Letterkenny travel.The National Park covers an area of about 16,000 hectares. There are mountains, forests, bogs and lakes in the park. The beautiful valley of Glenveagh divides the region into two parts and the park has been named after it. The two peaks of the highest mountains in Donegal are also located here. They are the Errigal and the Slieve Snacht.

There are many lakes in the park , among them the most magnificent one is the Lough Veagh. The beautiful lake set against the majestic backdrop of the vast sky and the mountain gives it a beguiling serenity. The granite lying underneath the mountain peaks gives the park a different character. The ice covered peaks of Poisoned Glen and Bingrom lies at the southwest end of the park. To the north-east of the park lies the gentler array of hills, the deep peat bogs and the swamps of the OwenCarrow river.

The vegetation covering of the park mostly comprises the woodlands of Oak and Birch. They serve as the habitats for animals like badgers, foxes, stoats and birds like Siskins, Treecreepers, Redstarts, Wood Warbles, Ravens, Peregrines, Stonechat, Grouse. The park is also the house to various beautiful flowers like Tormentil, Bog Asphodel and many more.Large herds of Red Deers also exist in the park. It is their favorite place to spend the summer months.The park has mountainous hiking tracts, some lovely paths for pleasant walks along the valley. During the summer months, guided tours and hill walk tours are available.

There is a castle which overlooks Lough Veagh. It is another popular tourist attraction here. It is an old building of four storeys. There is a garden covering an area of around 11 hectares surrounding the castle. The park was opened in the year 1986. There is a visitor's center in the park , where you will get full information about the park,the castle and its surroundings.

The Park remains open throughout the year. Entry to the park is free. However, there is a little charge for entering the castle. There are audio visual shows and exhibits in the castle. You can avail of the shuttle bus to the park running daily throughout the summer months and on weekends in the winter.The remote solitude of the place is surely going to add a new experience in your Letterkenny tour.
