Presently the cathedral is situated in King's Island, on the site where the palace of King of Munster, Donal O Brien stood. St. Mary's Cathedral in Limerick was founded in the year 1168 on the land donated by the King of Munster, Donal Mor O' Brien. Historians believe that various sections of the king's palace were incorporated while building the castle.

In 1651, when the city of Limerick was captured by Oliver Cromwell's forces, the parliamentary army used the cathedral as a stable.
