Acre is a popular tourist destination in Israel. Due to the immense cultural and historical significance of the town, UNESCO has recognized it as one of the World Heritage Sites.
One of the famous Acre Tourist Attractions is the Citadel, Acre. Citadel, Acre is visited by many tourists who come to the city during their vacations.
Citadel, Acre is also known as Asirey Hamakhteret Museum, which literally stands for `the underground prisoners’. The structure of Citadel Acre is in the North wall of Old Acre. The present building consisting of the Citadel is basically an Ottoman fortification. The fortification of the site is on Hospitallerian citadel’s foundation. In the earlier times, the Citadel of Acre formed a part of the defensive formation of the city and reinforced the northern wall.
In the twentieth century, the Citadel of Acre was primarily used as a prison house. The site also housed gallows. During the period when the British mandate was enforced, the prison housed supporters of Jewish Zionist resistance movements. Some of the activists of the movement were even executed here. It was in the year 1947 when members of Irgun broke into Acre’s Citadel and were able to release many of the prisoners.
Citadel, Acre has gone through some renovation work in the recent past. At present, the citadel of Acre consists of Acre Old City Visitor Centers, Knights' Halls and the Prison cell of Bahaullah. There is a memorial which has been set up in honor of the movement activists who were executed. Also, there is a museum that remembers the Jewish Zionist resistance movement activists. A new garden, which is known as the `enchanted garden’, has been constructed. The garden resembles the historical description of a similar structure which had been built during the Crusades period.
