Crusader City

Crusader City, Caesarea offers you a glimpse of the history of this small and colorful town during the medieval ages. This place counts among the top Caesarea tourist attractions. The Crusader City stands just behind the street of shops. It was defended by stout walls and a deep moat on which projecting bastions were present. Crusader City, Caesarea is one of the must-see destinations of the city.

Caesarea Crusader City is a rectangular area, protected by fortifications and one side running along the sea. In 1254 the project of completing this structure was done within a very short time by Louis IX. A gateway on the east with a 13th century groined vaulting allows entry into this place. To your left you will see the remains of houses having cisterns with marble spouts. You will find evidences of how the Crusaders used torn down materials to provide foundations for their buildings. A passage, with pointed arches on the top, leads to the southeast corner of Crusader City in Caesarea. Here you can climb the walls and have a panoramic view of the seas.

Within the fortifications of Crusader City, Caesarea the ground level rises. Remains of an ancient water supply and drainage can be seen here. Also visible here is the Herodian Temple of Augustus. The Crusader cathedral, with its 3 semi-circular apses, can still be seen standing here. This structure was dedicated to St Paul and was built on the site of a Byzantine monastic church. When the Crusaders conquered the city in 1101, King Baldwin I carried off the famous trophy from here.

The seaward side of Crusader City, Caesarea houses a mosque. It was built by the Bosnian settlers towards the end of the 19th century. Some warehouses on the Old harbor can also be seen here. There are various restaurants and souvenir shops present here at present. The Old harbor is another of the sites that have been preserved almost intact from the time of the Crusaders. The area occupied by the Crusader citadel with a keep previously, now has a restaurant on it.
