Literature flourished in Israel holding the mature hands of national poet Chaim Nahman Bialik and the writer Shmuel Yosef Agnon.

Literature evolved much with the work of a group of writers who became known as the Palmach Generation. These writers, who fought in the War of Independence, and who have entered the pantheon of Israeli literature, include S. Yizhar, Haim Gouri, Hanoch Bar Tov, Benjamin Tammuz, Aharon Megged, Yoram Kaniuk, Igal Mossinsohn, Moshe Shamir and the poets Yehuda Amichai, Natan Alterman and Uri Zvi Greenberg.

Filmmaking is also a growing market in Israel and had begun in the 1950’s and since has developed strongly under the Israel Film Center.
