Bahai Shrine

Bahai Shrine, Haifa is one of the most striking tourist attractions in Haifa. Located on the periphery of the city center, the Bahai Shrine is a memorial dedicated to the founders of the Baha’i faith who established the faith in Persia during the mid 19th Century. Therefore the Bahai Shrine, Haifa is flocked by pilgrims from across the country making it one of the most visited travel destination in the city.

The complex of Bahai Shrine in Haifa is surrounded by immaculately manicured gardens which are decorated with stone peacocks and cypress trees. The 19 garden terraces spread across a total area of one kilometer on the foothills of Mount Carmel. The garden terraces at the Baha’i Shrine were opened in June 2001. The completion of the garden terraces signifies the growth and development of the Bahá'í Faith and reflect on the significance of peace, beauty, and grandeur in the faith.

The Bahai Shrine is also known as the Shrine of the Bab. According to historians and believers, the most recent religious teacher, Baha’ Allah visited Haifa in 1890 when he pointed out his son the spot on Mount Carmel and instructed him to rest the remains of Bab, the herald of the Baha’i faith in the present location of the Bahai Shrine, Haifa.

Considered as the second holiest pilgrimage spot for the Baha’is, the Shrine is an 18 windowed dome that is composed of 12,000 fish scale tiles which were originally made in the Netherlands. Tourists can view the dome from inside and will be enthralled by the emerald green and scarlet mosaics and the fire gilded bronze symbol that features the Greatest Name of the Baha’i faith which is inscribed at the four corners of the shrine.

Tourists can easily avail guided tours that are available throughout the week except on Wednesdays. The approximate time taken by the tour is 45 minutes and includes trekking down the hundreds of steep stairs that lead to the main Bahai Shrine, Haifa.

Tourists need not take permission to visit the uppermost terrace, the gardens adjacent to the Shrine and the Plaza below the first terrace. At the entrance to the shrine, one must remove their shoes and visitors are given pamphlet providing details on the history and teachings of Baha’i faith.
