History of Israel is very rich and forms a significant part in the world history today. The country of Israel is located at the eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea, bounded by Lebanon to the north, Syria and Jordan to the east, and Egypt to the southwest. The long History of Israel is very much influenced by its geographical position. The Holy Land of Israel which is known in Hebrew as “Eretz Yisrael” has been sacred to the Jewish people since the time of the biblical patriarchs such as Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
According to Bible the history of Israel can be traced back to early 2nd millennium BC. The Land of Israel was promised to the Jews as their homeland is mentioned in the Torah. Many sites holiest to Judaism are also located here. Around the 11th century BC, the first of a series of Jewish kingdoms and states established rule over the region. These Jewish kingdoms and states ruled occasionally for the next 1000 years.
The modern State of Israel gained independence in 1948 after more than 60 years of efforts by Zionist leaders to establish sovereignty and self-determination in the Jewish National Homeland. In the year 1947, the British government withdrew from the Mandate of Palestine. The British government stated it was unable to arrive at a solution acceptable to both Arabs and Jews. The newly created United Nations approved the UN Partition Plan on November 29, 1947, dividing the country into two states, one Arab and one Jewish.
The glorious history of Israel goes back further to 2000 BC. The selection of Israel as a special nation was part of God’s plan from the beginning of time. God’s choice of Israel as His chosen people did not lie in any special size, nature or attraction. Actually, the nation of Israel was the least in number among all the nations. God chose these people because of His love for them and His unconditional covenant with Abraham. It was God’s plan from the beginning to bring forth the Messiah through Israel to act as the savior for the entire world. It is at this point that the descendants of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob are often referred to as the Children of Israel.
