The Mount of Temptation, Jericho is one of the major religious Jericho Tourist Attractions. Jericho city is considered as the second oldest inhabited cities in the world. The city is near the Jordan River and is located in West Bank region. The Mount of Temptation, Jericho is situated in northwest of Old Jericho city. The mount is also known as Qarantal by the Arabs.
According to the Christian tradition, the Mount of Temptation in Jericho is where Jesus fasted after being baptized by John the Baptist. It is also believed that Jesus was tempted by the devil here. During the 6th century ,a Greek Orthodox monastery was built over the cave where Jesus stayed. The site was one of many holy sites identified by Queen Helena during her pilgrimage in 326 A.D.
The Mount of Temptation, Jericho was also referred to as 'Mons Quarantana' by the Crusaders in the first half of the 12th century. It is also locally known as Quruntal Mountain, the name comes from Quaranta which means 40, the number of days Jesus fasted. St. Chariton built a chapel on the summit of the Mount of Temptation, Jericho in 340 AD. Another chapel was built near the cave where Jesus stayed.
The Greek Orthodox Church acquired this site in 1875 and in 1895 the Sarandarion Monastery was built halfway up the hill. The 30 to 40 caves on the eastern slopes of the mountain are inhabited by monks and hermits from the early Christian periods. While visiting the monastery you can walk up the steep path up to the summit and see the remains of the St. Chariton's chapel and enjoy the view of the Hasmonean fortress of Dok far away.
