One of the famous Jericho Tourist Attractions is the Nabi Musa, Jericho. The city of Jericho is a town in West Bank of Israel near the Jordan River. The city is also the second oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. The Nabi Musa, Jericho is a very holy place for Muslims as it houses the grave of the Prophet Moses.
The Nabi Musa, Jericho is 20 kilometers east of Jerusalem and 11 kilometers south of Jericho. The shrine complex is surrounded by bituminous rocks which are flammable. This is due to the fact that the rocks have tar and are used by pilgrims for cooking and warmth. The Nabi Musa in Jericho has been an important pilgrimage place and a pilgrimage festival or mawsim from the time of the Muslim leader Saladin in the 12th century.
The shrines mosque, minaret and some rooms were completed in 1269 AD during the rule of the Mamluk Sultan, Al Thaher Baybars (1260 to 1277 AD). Later more additions to the shrine have resulted in the present size. During the Ottoman rule in 1820's the shrine was further restored. The Nabi Musa, Jericho is a three storey building with a number of domes on top. There is a spacious central courtyard surrounded by 120 rooms and halls. The main mosque is against the western wall of the building. On the right of the main entrance of the mosque, a door leads to a small chamber. In the center of the chamber is a tomb covered with green cloth which is the burial place of the Prophet Moses.
