Jericho is considered to be the 2nd oldest continuously-inhabited city in the world. The city was an early center of worship for lunar deities. There are abundant Tourist Attractions in Jericho and Tel Jericho is one of the popular of them. Tel Jericho is located 2.5 kilometers northwest of the central square, just opposite to the Elisha's Spring.
Archeological investigation of the site of Tel Jericho in Jericho started in 1860, but in the beginning it was fruitless. Sellin and Watzinger carried on the work in 1906-07, but no major successes were achieved until the British excavations of 1930-31. The meticulous and comprehensive investigations of Kathleen Kenyon in the 1950s marked a significant move forward.
Kathleen Kenyon, standing 21 meters high and covering an area of 40,000 square meters on the tell of Jericho, detected 23 occupation levels. The oldest evidence of human settlement date from around 8000 B.C.
The most evident trait is the broad trench which the archaeologists cut through the hill in order to examine the several occupation levels down to the soil.
Tourists can also see the remnants of the Neolithic town of around 7000 B.C in the trench. It comprises a part of the town wall and the 9 meters high round tower built against it. The entrance which is leading to the 22 steps of a spiral staircase is located on the east side.
A shrine of the Mesolithic nomads dating from about 8000 B.C. is discovered to the north of Kathleen Kenyon.
