Sightseeing in Jericho will present before you a wide gamut of tourist attractions that will leave you spell bound. The small town of Jericho for many centuries used to be the second important city in Israel after Jerusalem. Known for its lush surroundings in the desert oasis, planted chockfull with fruit trees and pleasant climate in the colder months, Sightseeing in Jericho is full of wonders and enjoyment.
Jericho was the first city that was captured by the Israelites after their 40 years of wandering in the desert after the exodus from Egypt. Jericho is located between Mount. Nebo in the east, the Central Mountains to the west and the Dead Sea to the south. Listed below are the popular spots for Sightseeing in Jericho:
The Tel e-Sultan, which is the site of ancient Jericho, is the main attraction in Jericho. At present very little remains beyond a few piles of rocks that archaeologists now tell were once parts of towers, staircases and other structures that date back at least 7,000 years.
The Spring of Elisha, or the Sultan’s Spring, is where the prophet sweetened the water. This is the source of water for the oasis. The Na’aran Synagogue was found after the Ottoman Turks shelled a British army unit camped on the spot.
A huge tourist complex with shops and a restaurant where every tour bus stops is close to the Tel. You can enjoy the modern cable car journey that whisks visitors to the Mount of Temptation. A 19th Century Greek Orthodox monastery is to be found on the cliff. Inside the monastery is a cave where Jesus is believed to have stayed during the 40 days he spent in the wilderness fasting after his baptism.
Two miles or less than that from the Old Jericho is Caliph Hisham’s Palace. The building dates back to the 7th Century during the Umayyad period of the Muslim Empire. It was apparently designed as a winter resort from the Caliph, but was destroyed by an earthquake before he had a chance to use it.
The most popular tourist attraction in Jericho today is the Oasis casino, the only legal gambling establishment in the region, and a magnet for Israelis.
