Broad Wall, Jerusalem is one of the popular Jerusalem Tourist Attractions. The city of Jerusalem is dotted with heritage, cultural, historical and religious sites. The city is also considered as the holiest among Jews, Christians and Muslims. The Broad Wall, Jerusalem was discovered in the 1970’s.
The Broad Wall, Jerusalem is in the Jewish Quarter and has a 23 foot thick foundation and is 10 feet high. The discovery of the wall was one of the most important archaeological discoveries in the city. The history of the wall goes back to thousands of years. The Broad Wall in Jerusalem was built in 701 B.C by the King of Judah, Hezekiah. The purpose for building the wall was to protect the city from an Assyrian invasion. The Siloam Tunnel was also built for this purpose. The King of Judah, Hezekiah was preparing for a battle with the Assyrians as he refused to pay tribute to Sennacherib, the King of Assyria.
The Broad Wall, Jerusalem enclosed the Western Hill and increased the walled area of Jerusalem five times. Many scholars believe that the wall was built to enclose the western part of Jerusalem including the Pools of Siloam. Before construction of the wall, only the Temple Mount and The Orphel was within the city walls. The building of the Broad Wall, Jerusalem is also mentioned in the Bible in 2 Chronicles 32:3-5 and 2 Kings 20:20. Many of the houses which stood on the route of the wall were demolished. The stones of these houses were used to reinforce the wall.
