The Old City of Jerusalem is surrounded by eight ancient gates and Jaffa Gate, Jerusalem is one of them. The city is rich in history, heritage, culture and tradition and is a holiest site for Jews, Christians and Muslims. The Jaffa Gate, Jerusalem is also known as Hebron Gate or David’s Gate. In fact the gate is one of the major Jerusalem Tourist Attractions.
The gate is a stone entrance and was the portal for Jaffa Road. This road was the precursor for today’s highway to Jaffa Port and the Mediterranean coastal plain. As you enter through the Jaffa Gate in Jerusalem you will come across a square which is between the Christian and Armenian Quarters. This square or plaza is the entrance to the Christian Quarter shopping area. The Christian Quarter is to the left while the Armenian Quarter is to the right of the gate.
The location of the Jaffa Gate, Jerusalem is between the northern hill of the Acra and south of Mount Zion. The gate is located along the valley and followed by the Jaffa Road. The road and the valley continue eastward and divide the northern and southern halves of the city. The northern halves contain the Christian and Muslim Quarters while the southern halves have the Jewish and Armenian Quarters.
Through the Jaffa Gate, Jerusalem you can also enter the Arab marketplace. Just south of the Gate is the Citadel of Jerusalem which is also called the ‘Tower of David’. From the Jaffa Gate you can also enter the Ramparts Walk which gives a lovely view of the city from the medieval walls. The David’s Tower Museum is an informative place to learn the city’ 3000 year old history.
