It is a must-see destination for travelers interested in Jerusalem tours. The Old City covers an area of roughly 1 square kilometer. There are massive walls surrounding the city. These walls were built by the Ottoman Sultan, Suleiman the Magnificent and took almost 5 years to be completed.

The Old City of Jerusalem has 11 gates, of which only 7 are open. The Golden Gate, one of the closed gates, is located below the Temple of Mount and is only visible from outside the city. It was sealed by Muslims during the reign of Suleiman. One of the special characters of the gates is that they are all angled 90 degrees to stop charging horsemen and prevent the use of long battering rams. The main entrance to Old City of Jerusalem, Jaffa Gate, was built by Suleiman in 1538.

The Old City of Jerusalem is divided into 4 distinct parts according to the ethnicity of the people residing there. These quarters are namely Muslim Quarter, Christian Quarter, Armenian Quarter and Jewish Quarter. Various sightseeing spots are scattered around the Old City of Jerusalem, like Temple Mount, Western Walls, Church of the Holy Sepulcher, Dome of the Rock, and al-Aqsa Mosque.
