Western Wall Tunnel

One of the visited Jerusalem Tourist Attractions is the Western Wall Tunnel, Jerusalem. Jerusalem is also the holiest site for Jews, Christian and Muslims. The Western Wall is part of the Temple Mount which is the holiest place for Jews. The Western Wall dates back from the Jewish Second Temple (516 BCE – 70CE). The Second Temple of Solomon was destroyed by the Roman Empire in 70CE and only the part of the outer courtyard, the western wall remained. The Western Wall Tunnel, Jerusalem is adjacent to the Western Wall and is situated under the buildings of the Old City of Jerusalem.

The Western Wall Tunnel, Jerusalem is a labyrinth of arches, tunnels and passageways which dates back to centuries. During the nineteenth century many Jewish scholars started excavating along the Western Wall to determine its measurement and methods of construction. The British researchers Charles Wilson in 1864 and Charles Warren in 1867-1870 excavated the northern extension of the Western Wall Prayer Plaza. At the Western Wall Tunnel in Jerusalem you can till see the shafts dug through Wilson’s Arch by Charles Warren.

After the Six Day War the project of exposing the entire length of the Western Wall was undertaken by the Ministry of Religious Affairs. While visiting traveling through the Western Wall Tunnel, Jerusalem you will be transported back to ancient Jerusalem in 1st century CE. You can see remains of the Herodian period like streets and masonry. There is also a section of the reconstruction of the Wall undertaken during the Umayyad period. There are also several structures dating back to the Ayyubid, Mamluke and Hasmonean periods.

150 feet into the Western Wall Tunnel, Jerusalem lies Warren’ Gate which has a sealed off entrance. This entrance has been turned into a small synagogue named as ‘The Cave’. On the northern portion is the remains of a water channel which supplied water to the Temple Mount. The channel dates back to the Hasmonean period and is named as the ‘Hasmonean Channel’. Also see the biggest stone of the Western Wall inside the Western Wall Tunnel, Jerusalem. The stone is the heaviest and is 13.6 meter in length, 3.5 to 4.5 meter in width and weighs 570 tons.
